Grant Program selects 49 local nonprofit organizations to support with many being BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color)

CHARLOTTE - The Mecklenburg County Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Board celebrates the 2024 distribution of grant funding to 49 local nonprofit organizations in the Charlotte area in support of education, prevention, treatment and research of alcohol and substance abuse, making it the most inclusive and diverse awardee class in the organization’s over 75-year history. Through the Small, Annual and Renewal Grant Programs, Mecklenburg ABC Board distributed a total of $1,930,000 to assist the citizens of Mecklenburg County and improve their quality of life.

“The Mecklenburg County ABC Board is honored to support these diverse organizations and their transformational missions to educate, prevent, treat and research alcohol and substance abuse within our community,” Keva Walton, CEO of the Mecklenburg County ABC Board, said. “I also want to personally thank the community volunteer evaluators who brought a wealth of knowledge, expertise and diversity to this year’s vetting process.”

Since 1947, the Mecklenburg County ABC Board has invested over $111 million into local nonprofits, large and small, whose missions support alcohol and substance abuse treatment and prevention. Through its Community Health & Wellness Grant Program, the Mecklenburg County ABC Board provides grant funding to eligible non-profit organizations and state entities, supporting programs that focus on alcohol and substance abuse education, treatment, and prevention.

Current community partners provide a wide array of programs and services to improve the health and well-being of Mecklenburg County residents. Many of these current partners are BIPOC-serving or BIPOC-led (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) and small, grassroots-based organizations. “As a first-time recipient it shows that the Mecklenburg County ABC Board believes in what we’re doing for our residents. We’ve been doing the work well before even being an official organization but now with the help of Grace Mar we have our 501(c)3 and with the grant are able to expand our services,” says Co-founder Dorothy Alexander-Clark of LOTS Lord of the Streets. “For me it’s about making a difference and legacy,” says another first- time grant recipient, Executive Director Dennis Williams of Pop’s Passion.
