What We Mean When We Say Alcohol Education:

Alcohol (beer, wine, and distilled spirits) is a mood and mind altering drug.  The Mecklenburg County ABC Board takes the sale of distilled spirits seriously.  We promote responsible use by adults over the age of twenty-on (21) through participation in a variety of community committees addressing underage drinking prevention, safe responsible use by adults, and through law enforcement activities.  By state law, ABC Boards must return at least seven percent (7%) of profits from the sale of distilled spirits and collected by the Board to services that provide substance abuse prevention, education, treatment, or research.  The Mecklenburg County ABC Board has had a relationship with Anuvia Prevention and Recovery Center since the late 1950's and developed our own grant program in 1996.  Our Alcohol Education distributions fluxuate each year, but have been as high as thirty percent (30%) of profits.

Several alcohol purchase studies have been done in Mecklenburg County with state and federal funding.  The latest study was relased by UNC Charlotte and The Charlotte Mecklenburg Drug Free Coalition.  Looking at study data released November, 2010, young looking people are most likely to obtain alcohol without being asked for identification from conveninece stores that do not sell gasoline (47.8%).  For more information about this study, visit: www.drugfreecharlotte.org
